SHELTER FROM THE STORM MINISTRIES

 Newsletter June 2016

Letter from the President

Summer is definitely here with the long hot summer nights, lush green yards, and birds waking us up at 4:30 in the morning because they are so happy to be alive.  Summertime tends to be very busy and active.  Oftentimes our schedules get turned upside down and instead of enjoying time with family, we count the days till school begins.  One challenge that we face in our house is enjoying each day as part of our journey no matter what is going on.

God is able to change us and fill us with joy without our circumstances changing.  Psalm 28:7 says, "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.  My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him."  We will never have today again. It is a gift.  As the responsibilities and challenges of each day greet us, just like the birds we have a choice to make.  If I choose to trust Jesus and praise him, knowing that He will help me, my day is joyful no matter what the circumstances.  Then I can go through my day with peace no matter what I am facing.  God changes me.

Please enjoy the summer.  Pray and ask God for wisdom on your schedule and to help you simplify your summer.  He will let you know what needs to go.  Consider having praise and worship sessions in your car as you travel.  Find ways to include God in your activities that are fun for your whole family.  Love you guys.  Enjoy the journey.

Building Update

We are in the middle of our build-out.  The landscaping has been spruced up by the US Cellular team. The sewer/water pipe has been upgraded from the street and the lower level plumbing is complete in the floor.  All of the subs come back next week and the finishing work will begin in about 3 weeks.

We will be having a tree removed in our playground area.  The play structure will be installed as soon as that is complete. Please pray that nothing hinders our project.  Continue to pray for safety for all of our workers, volunteers, and visitors that come to the building.

Many people have written scriptures on studs throughout our building.  It really is quite amazing.  If you feel compelled to stop by the building to write scriptures, please contact info@sftsm.org to make arrangements.

Praise in the Prairie

Our Praise in the Prairie event was great fun!  Thank you to EVERYONE who worked so hard organizing and working the event to make it a success! We appreciate our generous sponsors; Thrivent Financial, Ameriprint, A+ Storage, Bank of Sun Prairie, Prairie Athletic Club, Shuppe’s Auto Shop, and Larry Vessley.  Also, to many others who donated silent auction and raffle items, baked goods and food, to those who offered tents, and to all the vendors who shared their day with us...we are so grateful! And how about the incredible performers? From the kids' stage to the main stage we thank you! What an amazing Friday night service and an amazing Saturday where we met so many people who share in our cause and who want to get involved. There is no dollar figure that could ever quantify the value of meeting kindred spirits who want to help these moms and kids like we do!

From the Financial Manager

As summer is getting started please consider donating to our Capital Campaign for the new building. We have eleven rooms for moms and their kids and need your help to finish the building so we can shelter, mentor, help job search, assist in finding them permanent homes, and give them a firm foundation to begin their new lives. We operate completely with volunteers and it takes a community to help those in need. We have naming opportunities and don’t miss out on being part of this amazing project! You can email me with questions at hanleymichelle0@gmail.com or visit our website http://sftsm.org/donate/ where you can donate to our General Fund or the Capital Campaign. Thanks and peace to you!

First Choice Insurance Solutions’ 4th Annual Flip Floppin' Into Summer benefits Hope 2 Others and Shelter from the Storm Ministries, Inc.!

Each year FCIS sets aside four weeks to collect flip flops for a local non-profit group, Hope 2 Others. This faith-based organization works with the community in Tanzania, Africa, to help provide essential needs to this struggling area. In this specific region the  red sand contains micro-organisms that contain harmful bacteria that creep into the feet. Your donation will literally help save lives by donating a simple pair of new flip flops.

As part of our desire to help the local community, this year FCIS will also donate $2 per pair collected to Shelter From the Storm Ministries. Our goal is to collect over 1,000 flip flops and in return give more than $2,000 to Shelter From the Storm.

Please help us reach this goal by dropping a new pair of flip flops in our collection barrel in the lobby of our office building  at 1777 W Main Street, Suite 102, between June 13 - July 15.  You can also drop off your donation at the Bank of Sun Prairie’s west side location by Target!
