From Our Executive Director

Hello and Merry Christmas!

In this season I am reminded daily here at the shelter of God’s love, grace, mercy and faithfulness. The shelter has now been open for six months and I have been here in the Executive Director position for three months. I have lots of updates for you as God continues to move and work everything out for his glory!

We currently have five families here at shelter, 5 moms and 12 children. All of the clients are meeting with their case managers on a weekly basis, working with our budget advisors, attending parenting classes, house meetings and trusting the Lord to show them the path. A couple of the clients are actively looking and applying for housing as well.

These first few months have been quite the learning experience for us all, God continues to guide us and love us in our mistakes! We have established a set of core values, volunteer procedures and fine tuned resident policies. We have added new overnight staff members, created a family advocate position and continue to work on getting everyone into their sweet spot of serving.

We are thankful for every single person who has walked in the front door with a smile, with a heart of love and generosity and a willingness to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We are thankful for the donations who show up at our door just when we need them and for the continued financial support. We are thankful for all of the prayers, this is God’s ministry and we strive to follow him and lean on him in all situations. Thank you for your love and support as we look ahead to the new year, bringing in more families and more ways to love others!

***One of our clients came up with the idea to decorate doors in the shelter for holidays! We love this festive idea and the way it is building community here. Take a look at one of the client’s doors for Thanksgiving, so fun! We can’t wait to decorate for Christmas!

Date Night with a Purpose!

Mark your calendars for our annual Gala for Shelter, A Date Night with a Purpose, February 18th from 6:00-9:00 at Buck & Honey’s in Sun Prairie! The Gala is our biggest fundraiser and helps support our privately funded ministry. How can you help?

VOLUNTEER: Many hands make light work! We need volunteers in all areas of our event planning and management including operations, marketing, set-up, donation solicitation, auction organization, and decorating.

DONATE AUCTION ITEMS: We need Silent and Live Auction items for our event. Your donation is tax-deductible and we are happy to pick it up.

BE AN EVENT SPONSOR: You or your business can help sponsor our event. For a monetary donation you will receive tickets to the event, be named in our program, and be added to our event web site.

We are excited this year to be using Auction Frogs software to help our check-in and check-out process run quickly and smoothly. It will make our planning and organizing a lot easier too! We are currently working on establishing committees…so now is the time to get involved. Do what you love, and love what you do, all while helping others!

Please contact Michelle Hanley at hanleymichelle0@gmail.com or 608-516-8023 if you would like to join us, donate an item, be an event sponsor, or have any questions about the event. Thank you for your continued support of Shelter From The Storm Ministries!

Tickets are $50 per person. For ticket purchases, please click here.

If you are unable to attend or would like to participate in another way, please visit our donations page at http://sftsm.org/donation.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10

From the President of the Board

Merry Christmas!

I pray that you are enjoying this holiday time with your family and friends.  I want to encourage all of you to keep Christmas simple this year.  Take time to just sit in front of your tree, meditate on the Christmas story and think on the love that God has shown you through His son Jesus.  Make a decision for you and your family to slow down, maybe say “no” to a few things and not look at every event as though you have just completed the next task.

I lost my dad a few months ago.  His passing has taught me many things.  One important lesson I have learned is to treasure and enjoy family.  Time goes by so quickly and you never get those moments back.  Make memories and laugh as much as you can.  Several years ago I picked up take out boxes that were decorated for Christmas.  I cut up sheets of construction paper.  I made a sign for the top of the box that said “I Love You Because…”, then on the construction paper pieces I wrote dozens of reasons why I loved that person until the box was full.  The whole project cost less that $10.00.  I handed the boxes out on Christmas Eve as a theme gift to everyone that was there.  Before I knew it the whole room was reading their notes and crying!  I sure didn’t mean to make everyone cry, but do you know that they all still have their box?  I know my sister goes back to her box on bad days or when she just needs some love.  Let your loved ones know they are loved.

I love you all and thank God for each one of you.  Blessings to you all!

President

Welcome our House Manager

We are so excited to welcome Amy Davidson to our staff team! Amy is our new part-time house manager; she will be overseeing building needs and our volunteer schedule. Amy also manages our in-kind donations and needs list. Amy and her husband Kirby have a daughter, Mallory, and have lived in Sun Prairie for 17 years. Amy has been a volunteer with Shelter From The Storm Ministries for two years and has an amazing heart for this ministry. In addition to serving God through SFTSM, Amy is also passionate about cancer research and is the event lead for The Relay for Life of Northern Dane County. Welcome Amy!

Meet our Family Advocate

Madison Watkins has now moved to our new Family Advocate role which we are thrilled about. Madison has a huge heart for the children here at shelter and has transitioned into the Family Advocate position seemlessly. Madison will creatively find ways to build the family relationships, connect families with community resources and advocate for the children living at SFTSM.

From the Finance Manager

We have been busy getting the shelter in order and taking care of the moms and their kids and a lot has been happening! From the Finance side, we have been lucky to have Jane Nehmer join our team volunteering as our Accountant. She previously worked for the Sun Prairie Area School District and is our payroll and tax filing expert. She has been a huge blessing to the ministry with her accounting work and volunteering at the front desk. Her accounting knowledge and love of tax returns are skills we treasure, and we are very thankful for her compassion and hard work! Also, a huge thank you to Wegner CPAs for preparing and filing our tax return!!!

I love watching God work through so many lives in this ministry! We are so blessed to have so many people, businesses, organizations, foundations and families supporting our work. I have never experienced such joy in my life even through the hard stuff as I volunteer and help establish the foundation of Shelter From The Storm Ministries! Thank you, each and everyone of you, for teaming up with us to change lives in our community!!!

Lastly, please consider SFTSM as you plan your year-end giving. We are a privately funded organization and our important work relies on a “it takes a village” mentality and support system.  Have you checked out our new web page? Learn more about us and visit our donation page to help keep our shelter up and running. Simply click on DONATE at the top of our website and learn about your options to help support SFTSM.
